Issue At Hand

When discussing the ability to make phone calls, it is important to consider two options: making a call directly from the wearable device, or receiving a call on the device. Unfortunately, the Fitbit Sense 2 has a very different approach to the matter, or at least it was at the time of its release back in August of 2022.

“Can I Answer Calls On My Fitbit Sense 2″

At the time of its release, the Fitbit Sense 2 didn’t have the ability to receive phone calls. Even if your smartphone was connected to your Sense 2 via Bluetooth and you were on the receiving end of a call, your Fitbit tracker couldn’t handle the call.

There was no way to rectify this issue!

Even when Sense 2 had the necessary hardware, including a speaker and microphone to make it work.

“Things changed?”

As a matter of fact they did, In November of 2022, an update (firmware 1.184.52) was released that made it possible for the Fitbit Sense 2 to receive phone calls.

Note: As of 2023 There has been an exponential rise in the numbers of Fitbit smartwatches that can answer the phone calls!

Fitbit Sense 2 & Requirements For Calls!

It is vital to make sure few things are up to mark before you begin setting up for calling. So for your ease we’ve listed down the checklist that you should tick off. Although, keep in mind, that two most important things are “Sense 2 Calls” & “On-Wrist Call” to make things happen.

  • Your smartphone should be running on the latest OS. For Android devices, it is (8.0+) and higher whereas iPhone should be kept up to date too.
  • Just like smartphone OS your Fitbit Sense 2 should also be updated, there is a possibility On-Wrist Call might not be available on previous Fitbit OS versions. Check the latest patch for the Fitbit application too.
  • Have a seamless Internet connection up and running with Bluetooth ready to take the charge.
  • Keep the phone nearby. Fitbit suggests your mobile should be within 30 feet (10 meters).
  • Call notifications are ON in your Fitbit watch settings.

Setting Up Calling For Fitbit Sense 2!

Open the Fitbit application on your phone. Tap your profile picture and then your device image (Fitbit Sense 2). Right there you would see the On-Wrist Calls option.

Setting Up Sense 2 Calls on Fitbit Sense 2

  • Tap on it and there you would see two buttons, first is ‘Start Setup‘ and the second is ‘Learn More,’ you need to click on the first one.
  • After that you will see a checklist and instructions guiding you to go to Bluetooth Settings and look out for ‘Sense 2 Calls‘ connection.
  • Under Bluetooth Settings you will spot the ‘Sense 2 Calls’ click on it and a number will pop up on both your Fitbit Sense 2 and mobile phone.
  • Tap on the number for confirmation and this will pair your devices.
  • Return to the Fitbit app on your phone. Tap Done to complete the setup.

It is important to understand that your Fitbit Sense 2 sole connection with your mobile phone is not enough for calls. That’s why it is very vital for calls to reach your Fitbit tracker that you have established the connection with ‘Sense 2 Calls.‘ Without it you will never be able to get a call on your Fitbit device.

How To Pick Call On Fitbit Sense 2?

The process of answering calls on the Fitbit Sense 2 is straightforward, as one would expect from a smartwatch. When a call comes in to your phone number, the Sense 2 will notify you by using the ringtone you have chosen. If the caller’s number is saved in your contacts, the watch will display their name. Otherwise, it will display the number.

Possible Problems For Sense 2 Calling Experience

Despite the possible win that is having the function to answer the call from the Fitbit smartwatch some limitations might hinder the overall experience. Now they are not deal breakers or anything that might change your heart for Fitbit Sense 2. But they are here and they are limited.

  • If you have iPhone, talking for a long time through Fitbit Sense 2 might not be the most pleasant experience.
  • In the case you would accept the call from your phone there is no way to have it transferred to Sense 2. Unless you ask the person to call you back so that you might be able to attend using the watch this time.
  • Your phone is needed to be around the watch all the time. A distance too far and call quality might drop down.
  • Since Fitbit Sense 2 would be routing the call using a Bluetooth connection established between the watch and phone, having the Bluetooth turned on is more than a basic need.
  • During the call, the Fitbit application would be running in the background of your phone. So don’t be surprised if you find its battery dropped a while later.
  • Make sure the battery is charged and it doesn’t die during the call. If it does repeatedly, maybe it’s time to replace your Fitbit battery.

What To Do If You Can’t Get Calls On Your Fitbit Sense 2?

Although it is unlikely you’ll ever run into the persistent problem in case you might find yourself unable to attend the call. Check the following possibilities before making an impulsive decision to the send unit back or contact Fitbit.

  • Google Assistant must be set up as your default voice assistant as Alexa doesn’t support voice calling.
  • Turn off the Bluetooth for a while before turning it back on.
  • Restart your Fitbit watch. In case the problem persists shut it down for an hour or two.
  • Update the OS of the phone and watch while making sure the Fitbit application is up to date with the latest patch.
  • Once the update is done pair the devices again. Change in OS could lead to pairing problems.
  • Remove Sense 2 Calls and set it up again. (This is very important)

“Can I Make Calls On Fitbit Sense 2″

Let’s focus on the other possibility: making calls from the Fitbit Sense 2.

Unfortunately, the November 2022 update didn’t include the ability to make phone calls from the health tracker. Even as of  2023, this feature is still not available on the Fitbit Sense 2, so to put it mildly: it is not possible to make phone calls directly from the Fitbit Sense 2.

Insight For Future Time

I’d previously conducted research on the Fitbit Versa 3 and Fitbit Versa 4 and I can regrettably confirm that both of them also doesn’t have the ability to make phone calls. You can text, but making calls, nah forget about it. Therefore if being able to make phone calls is a crucial feature for you in a wearable device, I’d recommend you keep looking for an alternative to the Fitbit Sense series.

Although, it’s worth noting that Fitbit is known for updating their devices with new features, so it’s possible that they will address this issue in the future.
