Information You're Finding!

While Fossil Gen 5 is not Waterproof, it is Water Resistant. So you can take you Fossil Smartwatch to shower and swim sessions. However, you should take care of it either way and make sure it doesn't stay in high pressure areas for long.

Fossil Gen 5 and Waterproof Powers!

Released just before the COVID-19 pandemic Fossil Gen 5 has had a fair share of interest generated within its brand. You have people loving it because of its crisp display and bold look, and you have people conflicted about its continuous run on Wear OS. Either way, it is safe to say: It was a successful launch on the Fossil part – a brand better known for its explorations of other types of watches.

But we are not concerned about its functionality. Today we are here to explore if your Fossil Gen 5 is truly waterproof. To find the answer to address the raised eyebrows and ease the stressed minds.

Fossil has been pretty clear about its product from the beginning. Even in promotional events and social media posts, it has been stated quite reclusively Fossil Gen 5 is water resistant to 30 meters or 100 feet. Yet the issue remains here, even after three years of release, and the question that should’ve been answered long ago is asked: Is Fossil Gen 5 waterproof?

Before you find the answer of it, and before I write it here, let me ask a question to you: Do you know what is even waterproof?

Are Fossil Watches Waterproof?

According to our dear friend common sense anything that is waterproof should be able to survive depth of water at any level. In simple words, if a smartwatch is waterproof, technically you should be able to drop it in middle of Pacific Ocean and have it retrieved 2 years later and it should be fine.

Is it feasible?

Of course not, and that’s why the word ‘waterproof‘ is not the term we should use when asking about the prowess of a smart device. For sure, there would be devices capable of such, but smartwatches aren’t it. They are water-resistant and it makes all the difference.

Your Fossil Gen 5 is not waterproof it is water-resistant. Fossil has been clear about it from the very beginning. If they wouldn’t have been it would’ve become the case of manipulated marketing aka a perfect opportunity to file a lawsuit.

But did you hear about it? Did you hear someone taking Fossil to the court?

Fossil Gen 5 vs Fitbit Chare Water Resistivity

You didn’t, because they were clear. However, it is true there is still an essence of ambiguity about the matter. Which is also not anyone’s fault the same thing happens with Fitbit Charge 5 and Apple Watch Series 8.

However, it has been claimed by many reviewers Fossil Gen 5 is okay for shallow swimming (anything less than water level of 30 meter) yet most of them had conflicted opinions when it came to going to shower with it.

Like isn’t swimming more likely to expose the watch to water? Where is the logic?

“I Swim Quite Often Should I Be Worried?”

If you are concerned about whether you should go for a swim in shallow body with Fossil Gen 5 or not, then don’t, because you can. Fossil claims their smartwatch is perfectly able to tolerate a depth of 30 meters, and I don’t think anyone would go deeper than it. If you are willing then perhaps you should look into other alternatives specifically made for your niche needs.

Surely, it won’t work as well under the water as it would on your hand. What matters is that it will work and you have nothing to worry about it.

“Then why are we advised not to take our Fossil Gen 5 in shower?”

Well, I think it’s more to do with the change in the essence of activities. While you are swimming, water pressure on yourself and the watch would remain pretty consistent. Whereas in a shower a powerful spurt of water directly aimed at the watch can cause severe structural damage leading to a violation of water resistivity.

Not to mention soap, shampoo, and any other product that you are likely to use in shower is harmful to your smartwatch. If penetrated with it your Fossil Gen 5 can suffer issues beyond easy fixes.

How To Repair Water Damaged Fossil Gen 5?

In the unlikely event you find your Fossil Gen 5 unable to work properly try the following. There is no guarantee any of it will bring good fortunes, you never know.

  • Leave the watch unattended for 30-60 minutes.
  • Don’t plug it to a power source right away.
  • Use cotton cloth to dry it off.
  • Use Fossil mobile application to see if its still on in case of a black screen.
  • Change watch faces from the phone.
  • Try to restart it manually.
  • Once you are sure your watch has been dried, try to charge it, and continue to restart it manually.
  • As a last resort, you can also go for reset. Although, make sure you have tried everything else before opting for it.

Practice Caution & Remain Safe.

“Better safe than sorry.”

If you are like me who lives by these words, you’d know how convenient life can be if we practice precautions. Hence the tips to ensure you are always one step ahead of potential mishaps.

  • If you are swimming don’t test your luck at 31 meters with Fossil Gen 5.
  • Since Fossil Gen 5 doesn’t have a water lock function like Fitbits make sure you have a protectant on.
  • Avoid using the smartwatch under depth if it’s not necessary.
  • Before going for a dive make sure it is well-charged.

So Fossil Watches Are Water Resistant

It is not a Fossil mistake there is ambiguity within the consumer base regarding the terminology. Hence it is our duty to try to understand our smart devices better. To make sure they are used how they are meant to be used, and they are taken care of how they take care of us.

In the end, they are just gadgets, and then it doesn’t matter who/what is the manufacturer. All of them have an expiry date. What we can do is make sure our actions don’t become the reason for it.
